About Timbavati Nature Reserve

Timbavati is a vast wilderness that is home to one of nature’s most mesmerising creations: the white lion. This is not an albino, but a rare colour mutation unique to this specific region, and its presence has given Timbavati a global reputation. To see one of these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is one of the most sought-after experiences in the African bush.
The reserve’s magic extends far beyond its most famous residents. As part of the Associated Private Nature Reserves (APNR), Timbavati shares a long, unfenced border with the Kruger National Park, ensuring a constant movement of animals and some of the most exciting, unpredictable game viewing in South Africa.
Did you know
Timbavati is not a standalone reserve but part of a massive conservation area bordering the Kruger National Park
A safari in Timbavati offers an authentic and exclusive wilderness experience. It is a place defined by its commitment to conservation and its limited number of unfenced safari camps, where you feel completely immersed in the bush. If you’re seeking a wild, crowd-free Big Five safari with the added thrill of searching for the legendary white lions, Timbavati is unbeatable.
Get to know Timbavati
Timbavati operates on the principle of low-impact, exclusive-use tourism. The reserve is a collection of privately owned properties and intimate safari lodges, and access is restricted to guests staying within the reserve. Vehicle density is kept extremely low, and a strict code of conduct at sightings guarantees respectful and high-quality wildlife encounters.
Like other private reserves in the Greater Kruger National Park area, the safari experience is dynamic and flexible. Thrilling night drives with spotlights are a key part of the daily routine, offering a window into the secretive world of nocturnal predators such as leopards, hyenas and lions on the hunt. Walking safaris are also a popular activity, providing a deeper, more sensory connection to the bush.

History
The history of Timbavati is a story of community-led conservation. In the mid-20th century, the area consisted of cattle and crop farms, with wildlife numbers declining due to habitat loss. In 1956 a group of like-minded landowners, concerned by the degradation of the environment, came together to form the Timbavati Association.
This pioneering effort was one of the first of its kind in South Africa. The association worked to remove internal fences and manage the ecosystem collectively. The most significant moment in its history came in 1993, when the eastern fence separating Timbavati from the Kruger National Park was removed. This historic decision formally integrated the reserve into one of the largest and most important conservation landscapes on the planet, securing its future and allowing its wildlife to flourish.
