Where the reddish sands of the Namib Desert reach the bracing Atlantic Ocean are some of Namibia’s biggest dunes. And the biggest of all, near Walvis Bay, is the legendary Dune 7.

Nearly 400m (1 312ft) high, it is a challenging climb to Dune 7’s apex; the sand is soft and the sun quickly saps your energy (it’s best to go in the early morning). But get to the top, and the vistas – out to sea in front, and the seemingly never-ending desert to the rear – are without parallel.

And there’s no better way to enjoy the view than with an ice-cold glass of bubbly and delicious Namibian oysters, famed for their quality and size thanks to the nutrient-rich Benguela Current that pushes northwards along the coastline.
